Music

In the early years of Willis High, tradition called for each graduating class to create its own Alma Mater.  In 1936, Carlton Kissner wrote both words and music for "Loyal Hearts".  In 1938, three people created "Willis Alma Mater".  My sister, Rose, was one of them.

"The Black-eyed Susan" was adopted as the permanent Alma Mater in 1909, but the tradition continued for many years after.    Sam Rogers, Class of 42, attributes the words to Hazel McCreary.  And, now, through his diligent research efforts, he was contacted by Paul E. Foster, who put him in touch with Francis McCreary, and Hazel's niece, Ruth (Dick) Dunlap, Willis Class of '36, who was able to provide some information.  For information on Hazel, follow the "Black-eyed Susan" link below.
